This forum has been extremely useful in terms of the wealth of information. So, I thought of sharing my experience with you:
Application timeline for a child’s passport renewal:
Application submitted online -13.04.22
Old passport received – 22.04.22
Additional information requested – 19.04.22
Additional documents sent – 06.05.22
Additional documents scanned and attached to application – 10.06.22
Passport approved and printed – 08.07.22This was not a simple process at all. I’ve had to call/used web chat numerous times. Kept getting inconsistent messages every time I spoke to someone. However, one thing was very clear in that they were not prepared to look at the application until it had reached 10 weeks and within 2 weeks of flying – this was the most frustrating bit of the application.
When the application reached 10 weeks, the link to expedite was made available in the online passport portal. I emailed the details required to the ‘Expedite’ team. Received an automated response confirming receipt of the email. After 3 days, I received another email saying that the application was sent to the Upgrade team. However, when I called the advice line a day after, I was told that the application is sitting on the system as a ‘normal’ application. By this point, I was 4 days away from flying.
So, I went to Peterborough office (where the application was being processed) the next day. I got there at 7am, queued , was asked to fill a form and was told to either go home or stay in town and that I will get a call from a case worker on the day. I was determined to get the passport on the day, so I stayed in town.
By 2.30pm, I received a call from a case worker confirming approval of the passport. By 5pm, I collected my son’s passport.
Hope this helps others who are in similar situations.
PraParticipant@Helly87 I am very pleased for you. Glad it is now all sorted. I’ve just expedited mine on Friday. Received an automated message to confirm that they have received the email and should get an update within 48 hours. Not heard anything since then. Getting a bit nervous since I have only 7 days left before our holidays. I will give them a call this morning.
PraParticipant@RichMLindsR Thank you very much for the prompt reply. I will call them today for an upgrade and will be going to Peterborough next week if there is no movement in the application.
PraParticipant@RichMLindsR Thank you for the update. is it 10 weeks from when old passport was received? My son’s application is now in week 10, so looking at my options to expedite things. due to travel in 2 weeks’ time. Can I ask if you applied for an upgrade before you turned up at Peterborough? Was there a very long queue when you got there? Thank you.

PraParticipant@Helly87 – Thank you for the reply. You are right, this is not within our control and all we can do is wait unfortunately. Stressful times ahead if nothing happens in the next few days.
PraParticipantI applied for the renewal of my son’s passport on the 13th April. Additional documents were requested and this was received at Peterborough on the 9th May (checked Royal Mail). But the system had not been updated. Since then, heard nothing. Called numerous times to check whether they had actually received the additional docs which they finally confirmed on the 10th June! Called them again to try and push things along but the message I keep getting is ‘wait 10 weeks’. We are now in week 9 (from the date when the old passport was received) and getting slightly worried as travelling on the 16th July. Not sure what to do next? Any advice. Thank you.
