Hi all,
Wanted to update you on our application – feel free to click on my responses to see our specific situation.
Timeline:
Passport Recieved: 13 April 2022
Passport printed: 12 April 2022
Application approved: 12 April 2022
Application being processed: 11 March 2022
Documents internally sent to Durham: 05 March 2022
Documents received (to peterbourgh): 28 February 2022
Old Passport recorded as being delivered: 18 February 2022
Application received: 17 February 2022
Application submitted: 17 February 2022Incredibly stressfull process. Multiple calls to HMPO to be told different things. We even contacted our MP.
Finally got told after calling on 6th April to write a letter explaning damage to the passport, as all replacement applications require a description of how the damaged occured regardless of doing it on the online application. When I asked why I was not previously told he said no-one had actually looked at the passport application by that point. We got told about the new upgrade process on that day to get passport fast tracked as we were traveling within two weeks.
We got a call from an examiner on the 11th April, he gave us a choice as he was about to approve the application normally. He could approve it to go to central print (with all the delays about two weeks) or pay for the ‘upgrade’ and the would print locally like all fast tracked appointments. We paid the extra amount (around £70).
My advice would be to keep trying to call HMPO we ended up getting in touch with a VERY helpful chap from the customer service management team who told us about the letter and what exactly to write. I think our application was always going to get ‘looked at’ on the 11th, so was really lucky we had sent the additional letter stating the damage and we intend to upgrade the application.

worriedgroom22Participantjb22f,
I applied on the 17th Feb and went into processing on the 11th March.
When did yours go into “processing”
Seems like a lot of us went into processing around the same time. We should all keep each other updated and hopefully we are all approved at similar times.
worriedgroom22ParticipantI suspect they are moving around applications due to offices being overwhelemed. Durham is their head office that also deals with international application, so it could be that there is something that requires head office involvement with our application.
I’ve called in twice, they have said both times that it is waiting for an examiner and that the process can take up to 10 weeks for the 3rd March (when Durham received the old passport). By judging the comments on here I’m hoping/expecting my application will be approved by 11th-15th April.
We have our honeymoon on the 16th May. I thought 12 weeks was more than enough time, as the stadnard time on HMPO’s website was 3 weeks when I applied. I’m getting slightly worried now.

worriedgroom22ParticipantHi Passportwait,
It looks like you are joining the unlucky ‘Processing’ group. From what I can tell if you are lucky then your application goes straight from ‘Documents received’ to ‘Application approved’ in about a week.
If your application is in ‘Processing’ it is waiting for a physical exam from an examiner, this wait can take anywhere from 5-10 weeks from the date they received it in Durham.
Here my timeline for reference:
Application submitted: 17 Feb 2022
Passport recieved at Peterborough (via Royal mail tracked): 18 Feb 2022
Documents Received: 28 Feb 2022
Documents sent to Durham: 3 March 2022
Application being processed/waiting for examiner: 11 March 2022worriedgroom22ParticipantAmazing news hs99!
It’s really good it went to approved to getting it delivered in just one day!
Fingers crossed ours is not far behind!
Good luck for the future!
worriedgroom22ParticipantI’ve only been asked to send the old passport.
I’m assuming either Peterborough is super busy and is sending excess applications around to different offices, or that being mine is a odd case with it being a damaged passport it needed to be reviewed at their head office??
It’s just a guessing game at this point.
worriedgroom22ParticipantAhh okay, I might try that next week!
I’m trying not to get myself into a panick this early on. I also have a wedding to worry about before! haha
Yes, I was advised to send to Peterborough when I submittied my application on the 17th. I only found out today that its currenlty being delt with Durham.
I did think it was strange I got two seperate texts (one on the 28th Feb and 3rd March) saying they had received our documents.
Hoping that you will have good news in a couple of days and that I’m a few weeks behind you!
worriedgroom22ParticipantHi hs99,
Not good news about the backlog, but i’m not suprised!
Great news about being allocated an examiner! Hopefully it’s not too long now.
How did you get someone from the processing team to call you?
worriedgroom22ParticipantHi PKenny12,
It’s taking about two weeks for info sent in the post to be ‘linked’ to applications. I suspect your application is actually with an examiner as apposed to mine which is “waiting for an examiner”. Therefore I think you won’t have to wait long for yours to be approved after then. Although I am no authority on this!
Please do keep us posted on how you get on. I am also considering the fast track route, but we’ve been told conflicting methods to do so.
worriedgroom22ParticipantHi all!
Kind of wishing I didn’t discover this website and its fourm! Haha!
Here’s my timeline for a replacement of a damaged passport after our dog decided to use it as a chew toy!
Application submitted: 17 Feb 2022
Passport recieved at Peterborough (via Royal mail tracked): 18 Feb 2022
Documents Received: 28 Feb 2022
Documents sent to Durham: 3 March 2022
Application being processed/waiting for examiner: 11 March 2022Our honeymoon is booked for the 16 May, so hoping we’ve got plenty of time.
Just starting to worry, as i’ve never gone through the dreaded ‘application being processed’ wait. We got told the 10 week time scale start from when they recieved at Durham on the 3rd, adding essentially 2 weeks onto the wait.
Would love to hear any sucess stories after going into the ‘processing’ stage!
worriedgroom22ParticipantHi all,
Please do let me know how you guys get on.
I have a damaged passport replacement that’s been sitting in ‘processing/waiting for examiner’ since the 11 May at Durham (after sending to Peterborough on the 17th Feb).
Our honeymoon is not till 16th May but still really worried.
What did you have to do to go fast track? We got told on the phone we would have to register the passport as lost to get a ‘L number’, write in to cancel our application and then book a fast track appointment.
Please do let me know how you get on and if this is an option for us!
Thanks!
