Everything else was straightforward with many text/email updates – far better in this respect than the method from 10 years ago before application was done online. Digital photo easy to upload with a photo code from a shop.

The longest wait was the first stage. Old passport was sent to UK using express courier on 24 January, only acknowledged receipt by HMPO on 1 February, though tracking showed it had been in the UK since Wed 26 January.
Overall, it’s a much faster service than had been led to believe.
