Had digital photos done in a shop so that they could check them and make sure they were ok.
Photos transmitted digitally, and I just needed a code number
Applied online. This was a simple renewal. I look very similar (just greyer). Same address. Same name. No observations.
Sent old passport via special delivery the next day
Whole process took 8 days, including the August Bank Holiday

Applied by post to the Durham office. Notified by text when application arrived. I phoned several times and the passport status was always something to do with the examiner but differed depending on who I spoke to. Perhaps different customer service personnel have access to more detail on the database. I discovered that it was processed at the Peterborough office. I was about to upgrade my application when I received a text to say that my passport would be with me within a few working days.

Very quick. Recommend to get the online photo with code rather than attempt a selfie which may get rejected.
