As with most other applications the longest wait was passport office acknowledging receipt of old passport. Would definitely advise paying for signed for postage! After that fairly plain sailing.
This is the first of three passports we’ve applied for:
-Child first at BOOTLE office printed but still not arrived (applied 1st April!)
-Other adult renewal Peterborough office only today approved! Such a discrepancy between the offices.
Worst bit is all of the media coverage! Wish the passport office would fight back with statements or articles containing average passport turnaround times or an explanation to try and ease the stress!

Liverpool office. Went very smoothly. It took about ten days for my old passport to show as received after being signed for and tracked with Royal Mail. There was inconsistent information about the ten weeks waiting time, I counted ten weeks from the date of application however at a later stage it stated it was ten weeks after they received the old passport. However it didn’t matter as it only took three weeks in total.

After reading the reports of passports taking over 10 weeks to arrive, I was nervous having only 10.5 weeks until my holiday.
The worst part was that even though I sent via Royal Mail, signed and recorded next day delivery, my parcel was never scanned so I didn’t know whether my passport had been lost. However, less than a week after posting, I received confirmation that my passport had been received.
The whole process was very quick after this point:

Taken the full 10 weeks without any updates in between – due to fly out in two weeks and was worried I wasn’t going to receive passport in time even though I had given myself plenty of time. I had been offered a free upgrade to premium service had I got to exactly two weeks before flight and the 10 weeks had elapsed. They are clearly very busy and it’s pot luck with how long it will take so be careful if needed in emergency. Advice would be to pay the extra for faster service.

I was worried as it everything was saying it would take up to 10 weeks. I submitted online and posted the old passport. Royal Mail showed it arriving the next day but I didn’t get a text from the passport office to say they had it until 10 days later. So I started to worry that it might be another 10 days on top of the 10 weeks. Then the following day I got a text saying – we have approved your passport application, 2 days after that an email saying your passport has been printed and a text saying make sure you sign your passport as soon as it is approved, and then an email today saying it will be delivered between x and y time. And it was! So 18 days from start to finish. Great job Passport Office!

Renewal of child passport into an adult passport – old passport sent to Bootle. After all the scare stories in the media I was incredibly stressed about how long this would take, but was reassured by all the comments on this page which were correct, I had nothing to be worried out for a straightforward application. Application to delivery was 13 days (including one bank holiday). It could have been 10 days but took 2 days to post passport, and we were out when TNT attempted delivery yesterday (no notification of when delivery was coming was sent). Exact timings:-
