I called the progress team at 8AM today, since we’re flying at 8.30PM tonight. The lady said that the upgrade request (which I made last Thursday) was logged by the upgrade team at 9.20PM on Friday night. She said that she would send another message to the upgrade team and emphasise the urgency, and ask that we could pick the passport up at Peterborough (the application was in Durham).
Amazingly, they called at about 12.30PM to say it was all sorted and we could pick up at 2PM. Hey presto, we have the passport! Also no additional charge for the upgrade. This was for a first UK adult passport after UK naturalisation.
So, don’t give up hope, it really is possible to get a last minute upgrade, but I guess you need to give them two full clear working days to log the upgrade and process it.

With all the hype in the media I was very worried about getting my sons passport in time for our holiday. Going from this website and the government estimated time I figured 5-6 weeks would be about when I would receive it and it was spot on timing wise. Applied online and used the photoAid app to make sure the photo would be accepted and not delay the process. Overall just thankful it came in time, thank you HMPO.

Applied for 2 first child passports and it was an awful experience.
Documents sent and received at Bootle 21st March however, did not show until 12th April. Application then went into processing 14th April and nothing after that. I was told that they had been linked to my adult renewal application and this way they would all be done at the same time, well that didn’t happen and no one could tell me why although that’s what I kept getting told for 8 weeks.
Went to the Liverpool office 13th May to stand there for 10 and a half hours and they shut the doors with 4 people in front of me. So I decided I would make the trip to Durham (where the applications where) the next day. Up at half 2 and left at 3. Got there for 6 and was second in the line. Staff were amazing, took details and said they would call, 2 hours later I was told they were getting approved and I could collect at 1pm that day.
I had convinced myself our holiday was ruined however, the rush is on now to be ready to hop on the plane.

More regular updates would make the experience less stressful. Tried to upgrade to fast track due to the hype and stress of not receiving passport in time but after being on hold for hours every day after submitting our flight info, we never received a phone call within the 48 hours as stated. Eventually the passport was approved through the standard route.

26 days from application to receipt. Very concerned as only read the advice about 10 week processing after submitting (we travel May 26th) but have emailed the passport office to say thanks. The only thing that seemed to take any time was confirmation of receipt of the old documents, this took two full weeks which means everything else took just 6 days! I used the gov.uk website with the option to take your own photo and we didn’t have any issues. Really, really relieved.
